Easy Baby Shower Gift Idea – Painted Onesies

As a special treat today…one of my daughters has agreed to write a guest post about her latest crafty project. Here she is…

Hi! This is Dianne’s second oldest daughter Callie. I’mĀ hijackingĀ her blog today to brag about a project I did this past weekend.

Let me begin by telling you that I am most definitely the NON-crafty one in the family so if I can do this, anyone can!

One of my best friends is having twins, so I wanted to make her something special for her baby shower. The theme of the shower is “Prince and Princess” so I wanted to make onesies to go along with that idea.

I started with basic white onesies. These are cheap, so it was nice knowing that there wouldn’t be much money lost if I messed them up!

I printed some Clipart I found of a crown. I cut out the crown, then traced it onto freezer paper. (You might be able to print directly onto freezer paper to save yourself a step, but I didn’t think about that until after I finished.)

I cut the crown out of the freezer paper with an exacto knife (which I had to run to the hardware store to buy). That is how un-crafty I am. I didn’t even own an exacto knife until this project!

I taped two corners of the stencil to the onesie and ironed the freezer paper to the onesie. It’s important to remember to put the shiny side of the freezer paper against the fabric of the onesie – not toward your iron! That could be disastrous.

I had no idea you could iron freezer paper onto fabric like this! So easy…

Have the stencil ironed on really helped prevent any paint from bleeding out from under the stencil. It worked like a charm.

I bought some (cheap) fabric paint at the craft store, and used a sponge brush to paint the stenciled area. **Important: Slide an extra piece of freezer paper or cardboard or something inside the onesie before you start painting so the paint doesn’t soak through to the other side!**

After about four hours (which is how long the bottle said it would take my paint to dry) I carefully peeled off the freezer paper. Check them out!!!

I am SO happy with the finished product. They look great and were SO easy! I’m already trying to figure out what I’ll do next. My first baby is due in June so he might have a lot of decorated onesies by then!

  1. Adorable! You’ve brought back memories for me. I used to transfer patterns and paint t-shirts and other garments for my children. They are now 25 & 27…I miss them being babies!
    Blessings,

  2. So cute! I’ve had so much fun lately with freezer paper stencils, I wish I hadn’t fun out about them until after my kids were a little older, they would have been perfect on all those plain onesies.

  3. These are so cute. I am working on a shower gift now. Thanks for the idea! I also use contact paper and cut out images on my cricut machine and use as stencils.

  4. Callie…you are a doll! And you’re a lot more crafty than you give yourself credit!
