Is it a house or a home?

“A House is Built with Boards and Beams

A Home is Built with Love and Dreams”

I don’t know who first came up with this quote, but it has really got me pondering things…

My question is…When does a new house become your home? I lived in my last home for 24 years, so I can’t remember when it wasn’t our home but I am sure there must have been a time when it too was just a house.

As I look at the destruction of the house that we are tearing down

I can’t help but think about this….to me it is just a house…but to someone… it once was a home. I’d like to think it was a home full of laughter…and love. And from what I hear from the neighbors I think that is true.

As I plan our new “house” I am looking forward most to having a “HOME” for my family. One that we can all come together and share life..the good and the bad…I pray that our HOME will be a place of safety…and nourishment, so as we head back out into the world to do the work of the Lord, that we might have a renewed spirit and energy.

I want a place where love can abound and one that when my grandchildren tell their children about it they will speak of the sound of laughter…not what the tile looked like… I must stay focused on what is really important in the big scheme of things.

So for all of you out there that have moved… I would love to hear how long it took for you to feel like the new place was your home.

  1. This post kind of makes me laugh (not at your expense, I promise!). In the military, we move every 3 years. Sometimes more often than that. Each time, the thing that makes a house feel like a home is, first and foremost, settling into a routine. As far as aesthetics go, hanging our pictures on the walls really makes it feel like home. I’ve learned to do that sooner rather than later.

It’s interesting for me to think about all of the families that have lived in the houses before we move into them. I pray for them – that whatever house they’re in now is one that’s filled with love… and I pray that somehow we can leave our current house with some sort of spirit of love and laughter that will touch future families.

  2. Love this post! I think when I’ve gotten everything unpacked and pictures hung on the wall it becomes a home. Wishing you a grand evening. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
