Making an “Old” new house..

Most of you know that I am in the midst of the long process of building a house.  But not just any house…our home…the place where cousins will come to become best friends.

When I started to visualize this house I knew I wanted it to look ageless. One that will stand the test of time.

What does such a house look like? Well to me it has to have a front porch..

Front porches to me just makes a house look like it  would have so much love pouring out of it that they had to build more space to hold it all.

I am thinking about putting wood ceilings on the porch .

I love the cozy feel it gives but even though I LOVE blue I am thinking of making mine stained wood.

I also feel that such a house needs to have wood floors..

To me wood floors are a place that grandbabies can build blocks together. We are still trying to decide what wood floors to put in our house. I loved these from Armstrong

but I wonder how they will hold up. I had real wood floors before and I loved them but Mr. Amazing isn’t sure he is up to doing all that again…

What kind of woodfloors do you have? Do you like them? What would you do differently?

I have Bruce prefinished oak floors that I love. These are solid wood, 3/4 inch thick. We were able to buy them through Home Depot.

We put in Australian Cypress because we like to see the grain and the knots. Little did I realize at the time it would also hide the dents wood floors tend to get. Before we even moved in, we were installing the frig. Hubs dropped a phillips head screwdriver and it landed tip down. You got it… first dent, a perfect 4 pointed cavern in our brand new floor. But, we still love it (along with many more dents), and I think a flat tile is easier to clean. On the other hand, hardwood is timeless!

    • It is funny how many people have told me wood floor fridge stories…I know that I learned to love all the dents in our old floor…they reminded me how much life had taken place in the home….but the first dent is always hard.

We have wood floors throughout our home and we love them. On the first floor we have red oak, I think. It’s what was put in when the house was built 40 years ago. We bought it from the original owner who loved it here but had aged enough to move into an apartment near his daughter. We tore out the carpet and spent hours refinishing them. They are full of character and beautiful to me. We put white oak in upstairs when we finished off the empty second floor. It’s light and bright in color and I love that too. I’m also starting to love the darker stains I’m seeing on the internet. It’s wood – it’s all glorious!
