My Laundry Room Design Dilema

Other than this sign I really have no idea what I want my laundry room to look like in the new house….I saw this at http://www.etsy.com/shop/LeenTheGraphicsQueen and couldn’t stop laughing.  As a mother of four girls I can’t begin to think just how many loads of laundry I have done in my life.

Life used to be so simple …I was once thrilled just to have a room for my washer and dryer instead of having dirty clothes all over my garage. Then when it came to designing such aroom?…you put a washer and dryer in there…duhhhhhh.

But now there are soooo many choices. From what I hear I want a front load washer and dryer. We are thinking Samsung…no really good reason…I just kind of liked them. My biggest complaint? The ones I am looking at have orange writing around the knobs…is it dumb  not to chose a washer for this reason? I’m more of a blue girl.

Here is where it gets real messy.

If I put them under the counter it gives me great space to fold laundry…

But even though I’m short, I’m not sure I want to stand on my head to change laundry over.

We could raise them….getting rid of the headstand but now I get no folding space.

My husband liked this but thought that it would be a lot cheaper to just buy the stands that they make for the washer and dryers…

Washer and Dryer - much needed

Which of course is probably right, but you have to admit that the granite under the washer and dryer was very pretty and over the top.

Then I saw this picture on Pinterest…

oooohhhhh do I want to stack them????  Then I would have lots of room…or would this just be the worst of both worlds? The washer too high and the dryer to low?…. HELP!!!! Please tell me what you have and how you like it. But before you do check out this dream laundry room….

Just think how fast laundry day could go if you were doubling up….hmmmm….do I really need counter space?

I have a front load washer (and dryer, but I don’t know of any other kind), and I am only 5’3″. I have not minded the bending to get stuff in and out, but I did notice that the ones on the pedestals seemed that the washer/dryer were at a good height, but I could not reach to put thing on the top easily, which I did not like. Being you and your hubs are handy, I would think building something to put them on, but not as tall as the standard might be the best option. I saw this on pinterest a few weeks ago and thought it was a great idea- seems I saw it where they hand stenciled ‘lights’ ‘darks’ ‘whites’ over the baskets, but couldn’t find that one. (apparently I didn’t pin it).

Yes, you need counterspace to fold your laundry.

I would go with the countertop over the machines.

My niece complained about an odor in her front loading
washer and she had to buy special stuff to get rid of the odor.
Something abut the seals on the doors.

My laundry room is just wide enough to hold a washer and dryer side by side.
You hit your head if you don’t watch when you are unloading the washer and
putting the clothes in the dryer. We had to get the regular top loading machine.

I’d rather have a counter above than drawers below, but that assumes that you will have plenty of cupboard or cabinet storage elsewhere in the room. I agree that the last photo is a dream but my dream would be replacing the second set of appliances with a freezer! Our second refrigerator and refrigerator style freezer are now in the basement and I would love to have enough room in my laundry room (off the kitchen) for them!
Thanks for letting us go along with you as you plan your dream home!
    BTW: Love your new heading.

I am 5’2″ and have a front loading washer and dryer. Mine are on the pedestals that came from the appliance manufacturer. The openings are the perfect height for me. I put a towel on top of the washer and dryer and use that area for my “lay flat to dry” items. I keep my detergent and other supplies in the drawers of the pedestals. My sink is on the left and then the washer and dryer are side by side so it is very easy to transfer from one to the other. My laundry is just in a corner of our basement – not a nice decorated room – and I use a banquet table to fold clothes and a clothes rack to hang items that need to be ironed. I keep a small basket under the table for orphan socks and gloves. And another for items that will get donated to the thrift shop (once I have enough to make a trip.) My favorite thing about my laundry is the chute that allows us to toss laundry in the opening in the wall on the 2nd floor and it lands in a large basket on the floor in the basement. I use a product called “Afresh” once a month (just put a tablet in your washer and run a cycle.) This prevents any odor. Have had them for several years and no problems.

    • I remember my girlfriend’s house when I was a young girl had a clothes chute…I had to crawl up it once when her brother looked himself out of the house…he broke into the basement but was too big to get up the chute so he came and got me…thanks for reminding me of this memory….I have never heard of Afresh…good advice

Well, I’m 6’2″, so I don’t have that problem, but as far as a “dream laundry room”, I LOVED the first one. Of course, I would love to have just a laundry room. But, alas, I must share the space with shelves chocked full of needed but various things, water softener, furnace, well pump, jackets/coats, shoes/boots, waste basket, vacuum cleaner, dog toys/water/food all in about the space of 12′x 8′. I would love to have a counter to fold clothes on. Maybe then it wouldn’t pile up on our bed all day, until there’s a mountain of clothes that must be reckoned with before I can get my “beauty” sleep. I look forward to see what you decide!

Front loaders on a pedestal with a pull-out shelf under, or a drawer narrow enough to set the laundry basket on. This should put the basket at the perfect height for loading/unloading. Oherwise you are still bending over to the floor. Make the drawer (and pull) easy enough to pull out with your foot! Economy of motion…
