Finding the Perfect Dinning Room Set

When we moved from our home, I sold our dining room table….in a way, it was a bit sad for me.

That was the first new piece of furniture that we had bought as a young couple. My girlfriend and I had started a craft business and I had bought this table with the money I had earned. At the time, I never imagined that I would ever want anything different. And I didn’t for years. That table is where we gathered for many holidays….it is where we gathered to make science projects…and where I sewed many matching outfits for my girls…

But for everything there is a season…our new home will not have a breakfast nook and formal dining room as we had before, so the fancy table had to go. I am now on a mission to find a dining room set.

I want something that will hold my ever growing family…and yet feel cozy for Mr. Amazing and I when it is just the two of us. I would love a table that had built in leaves so I won’t have to lug ..or store large leaves.

I want a table that will look elegant when I want it to and yet my grandchildren can sit at it and color without me having to drag out table pads.

The chairs need to be comfy enough for hours of talking and game playing….yet light enough for the elderly to move them.

I saw this chair at Pottery Barn the other day and I keep wondering if it would work….

It is actually made out of an outdoor material….but it feels very much like real wicker…I thought that maybe the residue from sticky hands might be easy to clean off of it.

I didn’t see this chair in person, but I wonder how it would look to have one of these at each end of the table.

Any thoughts?

  1. Love your new look on the blog! Very pretty!!

I’m a mom with young kids and a dog, and that wicker makes me shudder! lol Food and dog hair will get stuck in all the crevices… But you probably won’t have that problem!

  2. Hmmmmm…I thought about that. As a grandma I need to think about that ….I did think of putting a bench along one side for little ones..When my kids were little we had a bench and we could always cram one more kid in. I did think that because they are really outdoor furniture that hosing them off every once in a while might be a possibility.

You mentioned putting these chairs at either end, so they wouldn’t be the ones that the grands would be sitting in on a regular basis. I like mixing things up and not having identical chairs all around the table. Go for it! We’ve had similar furniture on our deck and they look great after many seasons. You could even use the newer Sunbrella fabrics for your cushion covers. They are almost indestructible and are softer than the earlier versions of outdoor fabric.
We used to have a dining room table that had drop leaf sides, plus the additional leaves were on brackets/hinges and stored under the table top. Split it open and the additional leaves swung up and into place. Was pretty nifty.
