Pondering Doors

I love this picture….sorry…I don’t remember where I got this picture but I refer to it often. So if it is yours please let me know. This is very much the feel I want for my new house. We will have similar stairs…floors…and I have even decided to go with white walls.

So here is where I need your help. I like the idea of having black doors in the house. Less fingerprints…and a different look than I have had before. I was thinking of going with polished silver doorhandles.

Now here is my dilemma….I will be having three sets of french doors looking off onto the pool….

I have a hard time imagining them anyway but white. I am afraid that black would block the eye from seeing the view. I would love to have black handles on the white doors.

So there is the problem….can I mix colors of doors and colors of handles?

Yes!!! It is going to look great….. Those French doors are really windows. The doors inside will add interest ….. Every room needs something black, green plant and a book….. That is what I have always heard? Anyone else know that adage? E

    • Thanks Elizabeth….the idea of thinking of them as windows has really helped sort out my brain. I was taught that every room needed a living thing in it…I think that is why I have a problem with fake plants…maybe I need to change that to the green concept. I have never heard the book one but I like it.

I say yes. I really like things mixed up. Sometimes the same is good, and lots of times mixing it up is great.

  3. I agree with Elizabeth. The French Doors are visually more windows than doors, and your windows will all be white. Also, keep in mind that the idea is to coordinate, not match. So as long as your knobs keep within the same “feel” then I say go for it!

  4. I grew up with a mix of dark brown and white in our house. All of our doors to rooms were antique dark wood and a few to the outside were white. Plus we had a mix of dark wood and white chair rails in the different rooms. You can totally mix and match!

  5. I love the dark finished floors. . .we were just on vacation in a rental that had them and I told my husband how much I loved them. . .but boy, did they show the dirt! My dad had a dog with him and then the sand from the beach. . .we were sweeping all the time. Also, with the black doors, maybe it’s the finish but a few years ago I painted a door black and although I love it, it seems to get “dirtier” then my white doors? I don’t know. . .maybe get a sample of the finish and paint a door in your cottage now and live with it for a bit? Love, love, love the french doors — the more light the better, right? And I agree with Shannon — coordinate, don’t match!

    • Wow…I was thinking I wanted the black doors because they wouldn’t show fingerprints as much…hmmm…maybe I need to keep thinking. Or I could just start with black doors and if I hate them paint them white…

      • Again, it could just be the finish I used. Really, try it out first if you can and love the idea. . .black is so hard to paint over and why not have it done the way YOU want it the first time (when you’re paying), right?

  6. hi, Dianne, thanks for chiming in on my black door post too! Looks like we are thinking on the same wavelength. I love the look and can’t wait to get them done. Adding the molding will take awhile, but I’ll eventually do that part too. Your new house sounds great!
