When I designed our home I knew that I wanted a special room under the stairs for the grandkids to play. When I mentioned this space to our draftsman he said….”Oh , like Harry Potter?” Yes I suppose something like that.
My house , even though it is a good size..won’t have a lot of extra rooms, so I wanted a place for the grandkids to keep their toys. When my builder saw the space, he just imagined a full size door on it. I suppose the time may come when the grandkids grow up that I may want this space for Christmas decorations or something like that, but for now I am starting to imagine how I can make this into a creative wonderland.
I would love any suggestions…and pictures you may have to inspire me. I started my Pinterest search and came up with these inspirations.

I love this little door…not sure about the window though. What if the window was round?

This is just soooooooo cute! And a possiblity because I have daughters that are very good artists. But….imagine that opening with all the toys thrown around. That might drive me crazy. Remember I am just the grandma. I don’t have to live with toys in my view.

I love this window…they don’t really show you how you get in there though. There is something very classic about this look that apeals to me.

I like the arched top of this doorway…but maybe with a door…and then a round window beside it.
As you can see I need help. Please take time to offer me your suggestions.

I love the first one and the last one. The last one needs a door though. The second one is cute, but a little to girly. Maybe you could have it more like a beach cottage theme.
Maybe a dutch door?
My first thought was Dutch door. Allows you to hide toys & keep an eye on things.
I’m sure you are already popular with the grandkids (what grandma isn’t?), but this will take it to the next level. They will be begging to come over!
I sure hope so!
I think a hobbit style door would look awesome:

It combines a unique door with the round windows that you like so much!
What a great idea. The grandkids will love it.
I agree it needs some sort of door.
The one with the round window is probably like the
staircase in our house. We have shelves in their and store
our lecreuset and staub pots in it along with some other items
that don’t fit in the kitchen.
Your idea is one I wish I had thought of.
maybe we can do that if one of our kids decide to have
children.
Can’t wait to see your new home. Hope some day we get
to plan our retirement home.

The house we moved to when I was in 8th grade had three “rooms” under the stairs. The first had a short door, and was technically a closet, the rod ran perpendicular to the door and pulled out to hang short coats. The middle room was a tiny bathroom and the last was a full size closet. The best part though, was that they were secret. The wall was paneled and the doors were the kind you press on to open (I think it had to do with a magnet?, might be called pop doors?) Due to the seams, you really couldn’t see it. It would be awesome for a kid if you had wainscoting on the wall or something cooler than oak paneling, and a “secret” door. It would be easily concealed when kids aren’t around but SO COOL for them. Even as old as I was, I LOVEDDDD showing people the secret doors!
I love this idea! When I was a kid I remember I spent a whole summer looking for a hidden room in my house…I thought what a great way to run away…I could live there..no one would know and I could come out at night to eat…heheheeee…wouldn’t want to leave my food behind.
My brother-in-law built one just like the first one you have pictured a couple years back for their kids. My sister loved the idea of not having to lug all the toys back upstairs every night. Inside they had some shelving for certain toys and they also had pretty big sized, clear bins for all the other toys. Although the kids are toddlers they are pretty good about putting the stuff back in the bins.
I love the one you have pictured with a circular window – such a cool idea!
I stumbled across this and had to think of you! I really like your round window idea, and I also like the dutch door idea.
