Decorating the outside of a house

Is it just me or does everyone find it a lot harder to decorate the outside of  a house than the inside. Years ago I know that  had the same struggles inside. Its hard to narrow down what I like to what fits my style.

I find I like a lot of things…but that doesn’t mean that those things say…”Dianne’s House” to me.

When I started this journey I thought I wanted for the house…

A creamy color on the walls and lots of white trim work….and white picket railings…

The wood ceilings on the porch would be a dark stain and the patio furniture black with white and blue cushions.

Oh and a beautiful blue front door.

Simple right?

Well, here are some of my issues…The island on which I live is very Italian themed…which some people interpret as Northern Mediterranean…I am not a fan of the Northern Mediterranean but I like the Italian style.

I am afraid that the white pickets might look a bit country for the area, so I am thinking of black wrought iron….I think I can live with that.

Then I look around my block and I see every shade of cream you could want…I’m starting to think that my home might look really boring with the cream…so my daughter suggested green. There is a green mediterranean house down the street and it looks nice…but then out goes my blue door. My daughter suggested that the front door be black…which is fine but I am wondering if this is just becoming a mismatch of what everyone wants, and not really want I want.

Have you ever seen those rooms that the husband and wife compromised on everything and so nothing really looks good and neither one is really happy? I never want to fall into that trap, and yet here I am….

Funny how I was just fine  this morning with all the green and everything and then I drove past this house…The  blue door made my heart happy…

But I’m really thinking my daughter is right….I need to go green. Life is good…I can do green….

Oh no!!!!! I just mentioned to my 14 year old daughter that the house is going to be green and she had a fit. NO she says…it is going ot be tan. How come someone that hasn’t had any opinion at all about this house decided that she has a definite one as soon as I make up my mind?….So back to the drawing board….any suggestions of a nice tan color?

A tan house with a blue door sounds wonderful to me! My home is a light brick with cedar siding painted a tan color but the door is dark green (yuck). After 14 years I would like to change it to a sage green.
You said the blue door made you happy – go for it!

  2. I like using this (http://letschipit.com/) to take pictures I like color wise and pull their colors from them. Maybe you already have something with the perfect shades of blue and tan in them. I like these. http://design-seeds.com/index.php/home/entry/shell-tones1 http://design-seeds.com/index.php/home/entry/winter-cabin

I feel like you’ll be disappointed if you don’t keep your blue door idea, and tan would look great with it.

With a blue door, I’d go with a warm tan (complimentary colors :)
You should be able to see yellow, orange, red or pink in it. I’d start thinking in the direction of camel, honey, cornhusks, adobe, sandstone, etc. A warm color (besides looking happy) will make your blue door pop. Get some color cards and figure out which warm tans you like. Anything in that range would be appropriate. Personally I’m not into pinky tans but I like yellow tans — you might be the other way around, haha.

Definitely avoid cold greenish or grayish tans; they’ll look sickly with your blue door.

If the roof is going to be visible from the road, do you know what color your roof is going to be yet? Another thing to think about!

You must do what makes your heart happy!

Think of spider webs on a black door – see where I’m going here?

We went with Sherwin Williams “Sands of Time”. Besides loving the name for a home you design and build, it would look great with a blue door!

In case I forget to tell you, remember a black door can get really hot!

  7. Love that house down the street, very pretty
