When I started this building project I decided to keep it simple…make everything white and bring color in thru furniture , window treatments and things that I could change often.
So off I went to the tile store…wow…I had no idea what I had set myself up for. Floor tile white and wall tile white never seem to be the same color. Who knew?
I must have spent a good 12 hours, (over many days), in the tile store looking at every combination together. I know what you are thinking…who is ever going to notice? Well there were times that I thought that…but then all of a sudden I would panic, what if the floor looked gray next to the walls?
Then off to the paint store where white can mean just about anything. Years ago I had a man tell me that white is white. I walked out of that paint store and never went back. Sherwin williams has a whole paint chart of just white. Now some of those whites look pink…imagine that with those “gray” tiles….in my blue room.
If you follow me on facebook you know all of the stress I was going thru trying to pick the right color of “white” walls with a house full of construction guys making wise cracks.
Here are just some of the paint samples…all different shades of “white” that I tried.
Some other things that I have learned along the way….
They may put subway tile in subways but that does not mean it is cheap…
And penny tile….
costs a lot more than a penny.
As for white walls….I ended up going with Dover White walls and Pure White trim. I think I am going to like neutralness of the Dover…as long as my painter stops calling it yellow. I was tempted to go with the Pure White walls but there was way to much work put into all of this wood work to not try to get it to pop a bit.
So the moral to this story is… If you find yourself saying…”I’ll JUST go with white” be prepared. You might find your friends and family buying small hand guns.
