Buying a Fridge

I thought that since it has now been almost 5 months since I moved into my new house that it was about time to start doing some product reviews.

When you are building a house there is just so much to think about. For the most part I enjoyed it…except the appliance buying part. I don’t like research…I like to just go with my gut, but that doesn’t always work when it comes to appliances.

I knew I wanted stainless…I’m not really sure why other than that I figured that they were probably the best looking over the long term. I’m old enough to remember harvest gold appliances and once they were out, the were out.

I wonder how long it will be before we see this color in our kitchens again.

I also decided pretty quickly that I wanted a freezer drawer. They just kind of made sense to me.

The Samsung caught my eye right away. Truthfully I think it was the lights that came on when I opened the door. I am such a sucker..lol

I briefly thought about paying the extra money and getting the cabinet depth one. Then my girlfriend told me that I wouldn’t like it because I would never be able to put large platters in it. She was  right and my husband was happy.

So do you want to know what I think about my fridge now? I like the stainless steel look but I still  haven’t found a stainless steel cleaner that I like. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

The large drawer in the fridge gets off track pretty easy and that can be a pain. I don’t know why I thought I need it…I guess I thought I could store our leftover pizza boxes in it…the truth is ours is full of water bottles.

The fridge has a funny little alarm that goes off if you leave the door open….the problem is that the alarm does not go off if the freezer drawer is left open a bit. For some reason this happens a lot in our house, causing the inside of the freezer to look like a winter wonderland. Not good.

These refridgerators are expensive ,so if they are really out of your budget pause and realize that once it is in your house, it is just a fridge. Don’t buy what you can’t afford.

I love the look of my stainless appliances but I DO NOT LIKE cleaning them! They smudge in no time. I used to use some stinky stuff that smelled a lot like WD40. Somewhere on the internets I saw baby oil suggested. I use that now, and it lasts much longer. Clean the fridge with soap and water. Dry, apply baby oil, buff off. I found that it may need an extra buffing as it shows dust – it sticks to the baby oil. But once it’s buffed off nicely it resist finger prints much, much longer than my old stinky “for real” stainless cleaner. Maybe give it a google and see what other people are using? We had to defrost our freezer once or twice because of leaving the freezer door open. It frosted up the air return system and the fridge wasn’t getting cold and I thought it was broken.

I have had my new refrigerator for 15 months now.
Like you I wanted the stainless steel and also
    wanted the freezer drawer.
While out shopping I find the LG with two freezer
    drawers.

We purchased that one and we love it. It has three
drawers on the bottom shel fo the fridge. So one holds
    yogurt, pudding, jello.
One holds the carrots, celery etc and the last one holds
    cheeses.
The freezer drawers contain vegetables, frozen fruit,
ice cream and the bottom one holds meat.
Love that I know where to look for things.

As far as cleaning the outside I found that the Weiman
Stainless Wipes work the best for me.

We are only three people in the house so of course there
are no little fingerprints to clean up. My big problem
is that someone opens the doors with dirty hands and then the
back of the handles get sticky and sometimes prints are left on
the handles. For those spots I just use a damp paper towel
to wipe them off. I also like the weiman wipes for my induction
cooktop. Then once every two weeks I use the ceramic cleaner that is
white and has to be robbed off.

Did you ever find the solution for the small problem
yu had with your dishwasher. We want to change out ours
but since I have a portable I am afraid a built in one will
require a new countertop which means replacing three
countertops. Too much money to lay out right now.

    Have a great day.

    • Yes….I found out that all dishwashers say in the directions that if there is food left on the silverwear it might cause staining. Lucky for me I have a reader that also reads manuals…lol. I need to find those wipes you suggested…sounds easy…which I am all about

Windex foaming. It works wonderful! Of course, I have to drive 70 minutes to find the store that still carries it, but it works!

  4. We were going to buy one of those but at age 71 I didn’t think I could bend that much

When we bought our house we wanted a stainless refrigerator like this as well. Hate the bottom drawer because you have to open all doors to get anything in or out of it, the drawer “door” always comes off, the freezer drawer falls off the tracks too easily, and stainless is a pain in the you know what to clean. Next time I’ll go with side by side in black.
